11 Nov. Westminster. For John de Turbervill’. To the barons of the Exchequer. Whereas the king a short time ago had granted to his beloved and faithful John de Turbervill that concerning the debts which he owes to the king at his Exchequer he should pay annually at the same Exchequer 100s., namely at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and thus from year to year 100s. at the same term until the aforesaid debts should have been paid, and the same John by reason of the distubed condition [of the realm] has not kept the aforesaid terms, the king, moved by his service given to him laudably for some time, and wishing to do him grace in this matter, has pardoned the same 22½ m. of the aforesaid debts. And concerning the remainder of those debts the king has granted to him that he may recover his aforesaid terms and he is to render 100s. each year to the king at the aforesaid Exchequer just as he was accustomed to have until the aforesaid debts are paid to the king. Order therefore to cause it to be done and enrolled thus.

The king has taken the homage of Philip de Borham son and heir of Robert de Borham for all the lands and tenements which the aforementioned Robert his father held of the king in chief 1 on the day he died and he has rendered those lands and tenements to him. Order to William of Clifford escheator this side of the Trent, that having accepted security from the aforementioned 2 Philip for his reasonable relief to be rendered to the king at his Exchequer, to cause the same Philip to have full seisin without delay of all the aforesaid lands and tenements of which the aforementioned Robert his father 3 was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day he died and which by reason of the death of the same Robert were taken into the king’s hand.

The king has committed to Robert Tybetot the manor of Carbrooke with appurtenances formerly of William de Manners, king’s enemy, killed at Evesham, to have for as long as it pleases the king, so that he is to render per annum at the Exchequer the extent of the aforesaid manor. Order to the sheriff of Buckinghamshire to deliver that manor to him to have just as aforesaid.

14 Nov. Westminster. For John de Bocland’ clerk concerning penalties and interest which have been remitted. To the king’s justices assigned to the custody of the Jews. Whereas the king of his special grace a short time ago remitted to John de Bocland, clerk, the interest and penalties in which he was bound to Lumbard of Cricklade, Jew of Oxford, by his charter, provided so that John satifies the same Jew for the money which he received as a loan from the aforementioned Jew, for which money it is believed John swore an oath before them and other trustworthy jurors, and the same John on account of the disturbed state of the kingdom has not been able to carry the said business into effect until now, the king wishing to continue to show that grace to John in this matter, orders them, as he has ordered them at another time that they are to cause the aforementioned Jew to come before them at certain times and places, to cause the charter by which the same John was held to the aforementioned Jew in any debts, interest or penalties to be extracted from the ark of the chirographs of the Jews and delivered to John, to cause the same to be quit of the aforesaid interest and penalties, and to cause this to be done and enrolled thus, so that the same John is to satisfy the said Jew for the said money, accepted from him as a loan, at reasonable terms which they will assign for him, and so that the said money will not bear interest.

The king, at the instance of the his beloved Robert de Aune, chaplain, has, of special grace, remitted to Walter de Wauz all the fees, interest and penalties in which he was bound by his charter to Aaron son of Vives, Jew of London, who, without the king’s licence, withdrew from England to parts overseas provided that concerning the money which the aforementioned Walter took as a loan from the aforementioned Jew he satisfies the king, for which money it is believed Walter swore an oath before them and other trustworthy jurors. Order therefore, just as the king has ordered elsewhere, to cause the charters by which the same Walter was bound to the aforementioned Jew in any debts or fees by reason of the said money to be removed from the ark of cirographs of the Jews and delivered to the aforementioned Walter, and to cause the same to be quit of the aforesaid fees, interest and penalties, and to cause it to be done and enrolled thus. Nevertheless he is to presently satisfy the king at his Exchequer for the said money accepted from the aforementioned Jew as a loan.

Order to Master William of Clifford, escheator this side of the Trent, that having accepted security from the aforementioned John, John and Hugh for rendering their reasonable relief to the king at his Exchequer, to cause the same to have full sesin of all the aforesaid lands and tenements of which the aforementioned Philippa was seised in her demesne as of fee on the day she died and which were taken into the king’s hand by reason of the death of the same Philippa.

30 Nov. Westminster. For Geoffrey Gacelyn. To the kings justices assigned to the custody of the Jews. Concerning 40 m. in which the king’s beloved and faithful Geoffrey Gacelin was bound to Cok son of Aaron, Jew of London, deceased, by his charter, the king has pardoned him 20 m. and concerning the remaining 20 m. has granted to him that he is to pay ten marks to the king at the next Exchequer of Easter and ten marks at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next following. Order therefore to cause the aforesaid charter to be removed from the ark of cirographs of the king’s Jews of London and to be restored to the same Geoffrey, and him to be quit of the aforesaid 20 m. and to have those terms concerning the remaining 20 m., and it to be done and enrolled thus.

For the brethren of the Hospital of St. Katherine of Ledbury and their men. To the barons of the Exchequer. Because the king has learnt by an inquisition which he caused to be made by Reginald de Akle, his sheriff of Gloucestershire, that the suit which the brethren of the hospital of St. Katherine of Ledbury and two of their men of Kempley owe at the king’s hundred of Botloe is extended at 3s. per annum and that saving his indemnity the king ought to be able to remit that suit to them for 3s. to be rendered to him annually, the king, having compassion for the poverty of the same hospital and moved [to act] for the health of his soul and the souls of his ancestors and heirs has remitted to the brethren of the same hospital 12d. of the 3s. at which the aforesaid suit is extended, and for the remaining 2s. to be rendered annually to the king at his Exchequer the king has remitted to them and their successors and their aforesaid men for himself and his heirs the aforesaid suit and has quit-claimed the same therefrom forever so that for that suit they are to pay 2s. annually to the king at his Exchequer of Michaelmas, just as aforesaid. Order therefore to cause the king’s letters patent which the aforesaid brethren have therefor to be read before them and to cause the same to be quit of that suit in the form aforesaid, and to cause it to be done and enrolled thus.

Robert de Ferrars earl of Derby has made fine with the king for having the king’s goodwill and favour concerning all the trespasses done to the same king by the aforementioned Robert both concerning the king’s castles thrown down by the same Robert and all other trespass made against the same king and Edward his son up to Saturday next after St. Andrew in the fiftieth year by a jewel, namely a cup (‘pottum’) of gold which the same earl had of Michael Tony for invasion of the manor of Potterspury in Northamptonshire, which certain cup the same earl is to cause the king to have on Friday next after the next [feast of] St. Luke, and by 1500 m. of which he is to pay 500 m. at the fair of Stamford in mid-Lent, and 500 m. at the fair of Boston next following, and 500 m. in the feast of St. Andrew next following at his Exchequer, and the same king has undertaken to acquit the aforementioned earl against the aforesaid Edward concerning all disputes occasioned between the aforementioned Edward and the above-written earl, and the same earl will exempt from disinheritance for all the trespasses made towards the king or his son or others until the aforesaid day as long as he satisfies the king concerning the aforesaid jewel and money, just as aforesaid.

The prior of St. Swithun’s, Winchester, has paid in the king’s Wardrobe to his beloved and faithful Nicholas of Lewknor keeper of the same Wardrobe on Sunday at St. Nicholas in the fifieth year £126 13s. 4d. in part payment of 500 marks by which he made fine with the king for having the king’s good will. Order therefore to cause the same prior to be quit of the aforesaid £126 13s. 4d.

For Sausekin son of Cok’, Jew of Worcester. To the justices assigned to the custody of the Jews. Whereas a short time ago in the forty-sixth year the king had granted to Sausekin son of Hak’, Jew of Worcester, that the king would make no extent of the debts which are owed to him or any adjournment of their terms within five years from the time of the same grant, and afterwards within the aforesaid term, namely at the instance of his beloved clerk Roger of Evesham, the king pardoned Walter de Panes the 24 m. in which the aforementioned Roger was bound to the aforesaid Jew for arrears of the 44 m. by which the same Roger had made fine with the same Jew for all the debts, interest and penalies in which the aforementioned Walter was bound to the said Jew by his charters, and the king has recently revoked his recent grant and pardon made to the aforementioned Walter, they were ordered that, notwithstanding any pardon by the king to the aforementioend Walter in this matter, they were to cause the aforesaid term to be observed for the aforementioned Jew so that he may be able to recover his aforesaid debts according to the law and custom of the king’s Jews, and the king, for the laudable service which the aforementioned clerk has rendered to him in parts both this side of the sea and beyond the sea, wishing to do him special grace, orders that notwithstanding the grant or revocation of the aforesaid debt made by the king, they are to cause the aforesaid William to be quit of the aforesaid 24 m., penalties and interest according to the tenor of the king’s prior order directed to them concerning this, and to cause it to be done and enrolled thus. 1

Whereas in the thirty-eighth year the king had granted to John de Plessetis, sometime earl of Warwick, that concerning all the debts which he could be found in the rolls of the same Exchequer to owe to the king, and which were demanded from the same by summons of the same Exchequer or which could be demanded for whatsoever cause, that he was to render 20 m. to the king per annum, namely ten marks at the Exchequer of Easter and the other ten marks at the Exchequer of Michaelmas, and thus 20 m. from year to year at the same terms until all the aforesaid debts should have been paid to the king, excepting the debts which the same earl owed to the king for the knighting of his first-born son, such that if the same earl should have died before all the aforesaid debts should have been fully paid to the king, Hugh son and heir of the aforesaid earl should have and hold the aforesaid terms concerning the aforesaid debts to be paid at the aforesaid Exchequer, and the same Hugh did not keep those terms after the death of the aforesaid earl his father, as the king has learnt, the king wishing to do special grace to the same Hugh for his laudable service expended for the king has granted to him and his heirs that they may recover his terms, so that they are to render ten marks to the king at his Exchequer of Michaelmas and ten marks at his Exchequer of Easter, and thus every following (‘deinceps’) year until the aforesaid debts are paid to the king. Order therefore to cause him to have those terms and it to be done and enrolled thus.

At the instance of the king’s beloved valet John de Pysing’ the king has pardoned the heirs of Robert de Manekeseye 30 m. of the debts in which the same Robert was bound at the Exchequer on the day he died, and the king gave the residue of the aforesaid debts, namely, 55 m. to his beloved valet John de Pysing’ and Andrew de Lent’m, namely to the aforementioned John 30 m. and to the aforementioned Andrew 25 m., in compensation of their two horses that they recently lost in the king’s service at the siege of the castle of Kenilworth. Order therefore to cause the same heirs to be quit of the aforesaid 30 marks and to cause the remainder of the aforesaid debts, namely 55 m., to be assigned to the same John and Andrew and to cause them to have it. And the same assigment having been made, to cause the aforementioned heirs to be quit therefrom and it to be done and enrolled thus.
