Wiltshire. The king has taken the homage of Gunnora de la Mare , wife of Geoffrey son of William, who is ill and has not been able to come to the king in person, for all lands that Henry de la Mare, brother of the same Gunnora, held from the king in chief and that fall to her by inheritance. Order to the sheriff of Oxfordshire 1 to take security for £10 for her relief and cause Gunnora to have seisin of all lands that fall to her of the lands formerly of the aforesaid Henry and of which he was seised on the day he died. He is to cause the sheriff of Wiltshire to know when he has taken the aforesaid security and then he is to cause her to have seisin of the lands formerly of the same Henry in his bailiwick.

The abbot of Malmesbury gives the king four palfreys so that the king will remit the anger and indignation that he has conceived towards him on account of the reproaches he ought to have given to certain of the king’s knights by reason of the capture and escape of a certain servant of his who had been seized for trespass of the forest, and he is to render two palfreys to the king in the octaves of Hilary in the twenty-third year and the other two palfreys in the octaves of the Close of Easter.

The king has granted to Nicholas of St. Bride’s that he may render the 5 m. which he ought to have rendered at Michaelmas in the twenty-first year and at Easter in the twenty-second year of the 33 m. that he owes the king, and similarly the 5 m. of Michaelmas term in the twenty-second year and of Easter term in the twenty-third year, at Easter aforesaid in the twenty-third year, and that, henceforth, he may render 5 m. per annum at the aforesaid terms until the aforesaid debt is paid to the king, notwithstanding that he has not kept his terms . Aaron the Jew of York and Benedict son of Josceus, heirs of Samuel son of Josceus, Jew of York , have made fine with the king for having the lands and chattels formerly of the aforesaid Samuel by £100, of which they are to render £20 per annum at the Exchequer, namely £10 at Easter in the twenty-third year and £10 at Michaelmas in the same year, and thus from year to year and term to term until the aforesaid £100 have been paid in full. Order to the justices assigned to the custody of the Jews to cause this to be so enrolled and cause all lands and chattels aforesaid to be delivered to Aaron and Benedict , saving to the wife of Samuel her rightful dower according to the law and custom of the Jews, which dower the same justices are to cause to be assigned to her without delay.

It is clear to the king by an inquisition that he caused to be taken in every county that William le Moyne has lands that he holds from the king in chief, which he and his predecessors held and ought to hold from the king and his predecessors by the service of sergeanty as they had been purchasers and keepers of the king’s larder, and not by another knight service. Order to cause this to be done and enrolled thus, similarly causing William to be quit from all scutages and arrears which are exacted from him by summons of the Exchequer by reason of knight service that the king sought from him for the aforesaid lands .

The king has taken the fealty 1 of David de Maupas , who has taken to wife Alice, first-born daughter and one of the heiresses of Richard de Boneville , and the fealty of Robert of Sibthorpe , who took to wife Cecilia, second daughter and one of the heiresses of the same Richard , and the fealty of Geoffrey of Raunds , who took to wife Margaret, third daughter and one of the heiresses of the same Richard , for the lands formerly of the aforesaid Richard which he held from the honour of the earl of Chester , which is in the king’s hand. Order to the sheriff of Huntingdonshire to take security from them for rendering their relief to the king, if the aforesaid county shall remain to the king in demesne, for all lands that Richard held of the aforesaid honour in his bailiwick, of which he was seised on the day he died, and to cause David, Alice, Robert, Cecilia, Geoffrey and Margaret to have full seisin, so that those lands which David holds in the county of Chester, given to him in marriage with his wife, shall be divided between them as those in Huntingdonshire.

Order to the sheriff of Kent to take into the king’s hand the manor of Great Delce with appurtenances, formerly of Andrew Bukerel , 1 for the debt in which he was bound to Elias le Eveske, Jew of London , who is bound to the king in a large amount of money, and once he has taken that manor into the king’s hand, he is to cause the same Jew to have full seisin thereof in order to raise the aforesaid debt and to render it to the king, and if anything has been removed therefrom after the king ordered seisin to be made over, or distrained, he is without delay to cause such to be returned to him and to let him have it back.

The assize of novel disseisin which Robert de Columbariis arraigned against the abbot of Stanley , Robert de Plukenay , William le Poer, William de Plukenay, Reginald of Hadley, Henry of Leigh , Everard Sered, Walter Primberd, William Stubbe, William Siward, William Goddard, and John Carter, taken at Wantage on Thursday next after St. Luke the Evangelist in the twenty-third year [20 Oct. 1239] by Roger of Curridge, Peter of Yattendon , Robert de Auvers, Richard of Peasemore , justices assigned by order of the king, upon the oath of Richard of Handred, Robert Hemming, Walter de Buccote , Stephen of Woolstone , Nicholas of Wickfield , Henry of Fernley , Henry Coppecase, Roger Tailor, Ralph Barre, Thurstan of Eton , Walter Alewy, Payn of Knighton the Younger . They say under their oath that the said abbot, Robert, William, William, Reginald, Henry, Everard, Walter, William, William, William, and John unjustly and without judgement disseised the aforesaid Robert of his free tenement in Fawler , and after the king’s first crossing into Brittany the damages were established by them at 2s. The justices did not dare, nor did they wish, to amerce the abbot.
