Henry de Syrwell’ has made fine with the king by 5 m. for recovering seisin, to the use of Simon, son of Matilda de la Hethe , who is in his custody, of the land formerly of the aforesaid Matilda in Havering, which the king caused to be taken into his hand because he believed that the custody thereof pertained to him. Order to the sheriff of Essex that, having accepted security from Henry for rendering the aforesaid 5 m. to the king, he is to cause him to have full seisin of the abovesaid land, as aforesaid.

Derbyshire. Alice, wife of Matthew of Shipley , has made fine with the king by 10 m., and Margaret, wife of Robert de Burton’ , by 8 m., so that their husbands and Matthew de Stordes, brother of Margaret, taken and detained in the king’s prison of the High Peak for forfeit of the king’s forest, may be handed over on bail until the coming of the king’s justices into those parts [to take] the pleas of the forest. Baldwin de Friville has made fine with the king by £100 so that Roger de Friville, his brother , who has been appealed for the death of Walter of Kelleythorpe and robbery, is handed over on bail to twelve trustworthy and law-worthy men after he has surrendered himself into the king’s prison, and so that the king remits his suit to him if peace can be made with the appellants, or that the king will give him licence to make concord with the appellants if they will wish, namely so that, unless peace can be made with the appellants, he is to stand to right for this in the king’s court. Herefordshire. Master Alexander le Seculer gives the king 100 m. for having seisin of the lands that Nicholas le Seculer, his father, whose heir he is, held of the king in chief by socage and not by knight service, as Master Alexander says, on the day he died, so that if the king in the process of time might consider that Nicholas held his land of the king by knight service and not by socage, the aforesaid fine will be held for naught and the king will cause those lands to be reseised into his hand, if he will wish, and he has received his homage in such a manner without prejudice to the right of others.

Worcestershire. Order to the sheriff of Worcestershire that if the brethren of the hospital of St. Wulfstan, Worcester , can show that they had delivered 40s. to Hugh of Walcot, sergeant of Walter de Beauchamp , by order of Roger le Poer, from whom they hold a certain land, for the scutage lately granted to the king, then he is to cause their livestock that William de Stuteville caused to be taken for this reason to be delivered to them, and to distrain the same Roger to acquit them therefrom.

William Latimer gives the king 20s. for having a writ that the sheriff might cause the record of a plea that was in the court of the wapentake of Aswardhurn between Theobald Hautein and the aforesaid William, concerning two swans , to come before the king’s justices of the Bench. Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire to take security etc.

4 May. Westminster. For Aymer de Sacy. To the barons of the Exchequer. The king has granted to his beloved and faithful Aymer de Sacy that, of the fine which he made with him for having custody of the land and heirs of Warin of Bassingbourn , of which he was bound to render 100 m. per annum, he may henceforth render £40 each year, namely £20 at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and £20 at the Exchequer of Easter, until the aforesaid fine is paid to the king. For this grant Aymer has remitted to the king the £20 that he is accustomed to take each year at the Exchequer for his annual fee. Order to cause this to be done and enrolled thus.

The king has pardoned 250 m. of the 750 m. which the venerable father W. bishop of Exeter owes him from terms past of the fine of 2000 m. that he made with him for having custody of the land and heir of William d’Avranches . He has also granted him that he may render 100 m. of the remaining 500 m. each year at the Exchequer, namely 50 m. at Michaelmas in the twentieth year, 50 m. at Easter in the twenty-first year, and 100 m. thus from year to year at the same terms until the aforesaid 500 m. are paid to the king. Norfolk. Concerning the fine of the bishop of Norwich . The bishop of Norwich claims the manor of Bacton with appurtenances, which is of his fee and which ought to be his escheat , as he says, and he offers the king £100 for having his seisin without prejudice to anyone else, and they are to be received, and he is to render a moiety at Michaelmas in the twentieth year and the other moiety at Easter next following in the twenty-first year. It is to be known that the whole of the king’s council attests that this manor does not pertain to the heir of Robert fitz Walter, who is under age. ¹

Order to the sheriff of Somerset that, having accepted security from Nicholas for his relief due to the king, he is to cause him to have full seisin of all lands of which Hugh was seised as of fee in Merriott on the day he died.

Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire to cause them to have conduct for this.

20 May. Marwell. Derbyshire. For Joan, who was the wife of Thomas of Barlow . Joan, who was the wife of Thomas of Barlow , has made fine with the king by 3 m. for custody of the land that Thomas held from the king in Barlow , to have until the aforesaid heirs come of age, ¹ and for the custody and marriage of the heirs of the same Thomas, similarly saving to the king the relief due from the aforesaid land . Order to the constable of the High Peak that, having accepted security from Joan for rendering the aforesaid 3 m. to the king, namely one mark at Michaelmas in the twentieth year, one mark at Easter next following in the twenty-first year, and one mark at Michaelmas next following in the same year, he is to cause her to have full seisin of the aforesaid custody and the aforesaid heirs.

Concerning the custody of Clarendon and Groveley. The king has committed the custody of the forests of Clarendon and Groveley to Henry of Down until three years from Pentecost in the twentieth year, so that he renders £20 each year at the Exchequer for pannage and other issues of the same forests, so that 60s. 10d. will be allowed to him in each of the aforesaid three years for the custody of the king’s houses of Clarendon . Order to the foresters, verderers and all others of the aforesaid forests to be intendant and respondent to the abovesaid Henry as the king’s bailiff in all things that pertain to the custody of the aforesaid forests. Warwickshire. For Ralph de Audeville . Ralph de Audeville has made fine with the king by 20 m. for having licence to make concord with William de Botreaux , Hugh Streche and Hawise, his mother, Geoffrey Gilewis’, Henry Meky and John Long , who have appealed him for robbery and breach of the king’s peace. Order to the sheriff of Warwickshire that, having accepted security from Ralph for rendering the aforesaid 20 m. to the king, he is to cause him neither to be summoned in his county court nor outlawed, as the king has ordered him, until he has a command from the king otherwise, but to permit him to return to his own parts and make peace with his aforesaid adversaries, if he will wish.

To the sheriff of Gloucestershire . ¹ Order to deliver the 31 tuns of wine that remained at Bristol of the wines lately taken there to the king’s use, which it was not expedient to be retained to the king’s use, to the king’s trustworthy men of Bristol, so that they will deliver twelve of the aforesaid tuns by their hands to Peter Clerk, James le Warre, Richard Aylard’ and William de Beaumont , burgesses of the same vill, who have purchased that wine , so that they answer the king at Christmas in the twenty-first year for 4 m. for each tun of wine, and eight tuns to Reymond Gregor’, Gilbert Matthew, William Bonfeser, William de Lanbeske and Peter de Lisle and other merchants of Gascony who are in the same vill, so that they answer for 4 m. at the same term for each of the aforesaid eight tuns. The same burgesses are to retain the remaining eleven tuns for rendering the same price to the king at the same term, so that after they have taken security both from the aforesaid four burgesses and the aforesaid merchants for rendering the monies pertaining to them, as aforesaid, they are to give surety to the sheriff for rendering all of the aforesaid price of the aforesaid 31 tuns to the king at the aforesaid term. Concerning the manor of Hatfield [Broad Oak]. To the prior of Hatfield or his bailiffs. ¹ The king well remembers that when the prior was last with the king he suggested that his predecessor did not receive the aforesaid manor with the livery of corn, on account of which, at the prior’s instance, the king then granted him livery of the corn of the forthcoming autumn. Elias le Eveske, Jew of London , has made fine with the king, for himself and Henna, his daughter, formerly the wife of Josceus Priest , by rendering 1000 m. at two terms, namely 500 m. at Easter in the twenty-first year and 500 m. at Michaelmas next following, for having the king’s grace and for removing all suspicion that was had towards them concerning the chattels of Josceus Priest , for which the king might suspect them by reason of the aforesaid Josceus or his property. It is granted to the said Henna, daughter of the aforesaid Elias, by this fine, that she may have £200 in the name of dower from the chattels of the said Josceus and her daughter that she has by Josceus shall have £40 in order to marry herself . Now that she may be pregnant, if she has a female child, she will have £40 from the chattels of the same Josceus to provide for her. If she has a male child, he will share the lands and rents of the same Josceus with Isaac, his first-born son , according to the laws and custom of the Jews . It is also granted to Elias that he shall not be placed in the tallage and no extent shall be made of his lands that are his gage before Michaelmas in the twenty-first year .

Isaac, son of Josceus Priest , has made fine with the king by rendering 1000 m. at the below-written terms for having the king’s grace and his inheritance, and for removing all suspicion that might be had towards him concerning the chattels of his father, which were carried off, and for having the chattels of his father , saving £200 which Henna, formerly the wife of the same Josceus , will have from those chattels in the name of dower, and saving also £80 which will be assigned to the two daughters of the same Henna , as long as she will have a daughter now that she may be pregnant, as is contained in the fine of Elias le Eveske . It is also granted to him that he shall not be placed in the tallage and nor shall any extent be made of his lands that are his gages until Michaelmas in the twenty-first year . ² It is provided that all chattels of the same Josceus are to be committed into the hand of Benedict Crispin and of Jacob, his brother , so they will answer the king for all issues until the aforesaid 1000 m. are paid.
