29 Oct. Westminster. Concerning the fine of the earl of Gloucester for the marriage of his daughter. Order to Thomas of Cirencester that once he has caused 200 librates of the land formerly of W. earl of Devon to be extended, as the king more fully signifies to him by his other letters, he is to cause the king’s stock and corn from the aforesaid lands, of which the earl of Gloucester will have use, to be valued by trustworthy and law-worthy men and to demise them to the earl by the same value, and to cause the king to know the value, because the earl has given him surety that he will render the said value to the king at the Exchequer of Hilary in the eleventh year. 1

G. de Clare, earl of Gloucester, has made fine with the king by 2000 m. for marrying his first-born daughter to Baldwin, son of Baldwin de Redvers, son of William de Redvers, earl of Devon, and for having 200 librates of land in simple custody, without the castle, from the land formerly of the aforesaid W. earl of Devon until the aforesaid Baldwin comes of age, as is more fully contained in the Patent Roll. 1

The king has committed to Thomas of Burnham the son and heir of John of Lincoln and the daughter and heiress of Ivo of Lincoln, who were in the custody of P., former bishop of Norwich, to keep for as long as it pleases the king. Order to Nicholas of Framlingham, keeper of the bishopric of Norwich , to cause Thomas to have full seisin of the aforesaid heirs with the lands and rents of the same to answer for as long as it pleases the king. If Simon de Skermuges, in whose custody the aforesaid heirs are, will not surrender the aforesaid heirs at the king’s command, he is to distrain him to render the same to Thomas. 1

Concerning the manor of Brill. To the sheriff of Buckinghamshire. The king has committed his manor of Brill with his houses there to Master Simon, his cook, to keep for as long as he will keep it well, so that he renders 5 m. at the Exchequer in each year that he will have the manor in his hand of the debt that Walter Bastard owes the king for the arrears that are exacted from him by summons of the Exchequer of the farm of same manor. Order to cause Master Simon to have full seisin of the aforesaid manor with the aforesaid houses there, as aforesaid. 1

Concerning the chattels of Henry de Stuteville. Order to the sheriff of Nottinghamshire that, immediately after having viewed these letters, he is to cause the king’s advantage to be made from all property and chattels, 1 both corn and rents and other chattels, found in the lands of Henry de Stuteville in his bailiwick, which he took into the king’s hand by his order. 2

The abbot of Malmesbury has made fine with the king by 20 m. so that, for two years from Michaelmas in the tenth year, no sheriff of Wiltshire is to enter into the manor of Malmesbury, which the abbot holds by right from the king at farm by bail of King John, or into the hundred pertaining to that manor, in order to hold pleas there or to make their tourn. Order to the sheriff of Wiltshire not to enter into the aforesaid manor or the hundred pertaining to it in order to hold pleas or to make his tourn, as aforesaid. Witness J. bishop of Bath. The abbot of Malmesbury has made fine with the king by 20 m. so that the sheriff of Wiltshire or his bailiffs are not to enter into his hundreds of Malmesbury, Startley and Chedglow for up to two years next following Michaelmas in the tenth year. The king has committed the land of Peter de Maulnay to Alexander of Dorset to keep for as long as etc., so that he answers the king for the issues of the same land. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to place in respite, until 15 days from Hilary in the eleventh year, the demand of £25 that they make by summons of the Exchequer for a fine that he (sic.) made with the king for G. earl of Gloucester for the son and heir of Hugh Poinz. 1 Witness the king. 1 Dec. Westminster. For Roger of Torpel. To the sheriff of Northamptonshire. Roger of Torpel, son and heir of Roger of Torpel, has made fine with the king by two palfreys for having in his hand and his custody, until he comes of age, all lands with appurtenances that he ought to hold of the abbot of Peterborough . The same Roger is to render £40 each year from the aforesaid lands at the Exchequer until he comes of age, namely £20 at Easter and £20 at Michaelmas. Order that, having accepted security from Roger for rendering the aforesaid two palfreys and the aforesaid £40 each year at the abovesaid terms, as aforesaid, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay of all of the aforesaid lands in his bailiwick. 1 Witness the king. Order to the sheriff of Devon to take into the king’s hand his hundred of Braunton , which was in the hand of William Brewer by bail of the king, and deliver it to Thomas of Cirencester, to whom the king has committed it to keep for as long as it pleases him.

It is written in the same manner to the same sheriff, concerning taking the manor of Alphington with appurtenances, which is a demesne manor of the king that Payn de Chaworth held by bail of King John, father of the king, into the king’s hand and delivering it to the same Thomas.

3 Dec. Westminster. Concerning the hundred of Lestane. Order to the sheriff of Somerset to cause Thomas of Cirencester to have full seisin without delay of the hundred of Lestane , which the king committed to him to keep for as long as it pleases the king, so that he answers for it at the Exchequer, for which hundred neither the same sheriff nor other sheriffs of Somerset have answered. Concerning the land of Payn de Chaworth. Order to the sheriff of Gloucestershire to take into the king’s hand the land of Payn de Chaworth in his bailiwick, with all chattels, rents and corn found therein, and hand it over to four law-worthy men together with Adam de Chaworth, servant of the aforesaid Payn, to keep, harvest and sow with the corn of the same Payn. He is also to cause the same chattels, rent and corn to be safely kept until the king orders otherwise, saving reasonable costs incurred in sowing and harvesting that land. If anything has been removed, he is to cause it to be handed over to the aforesaid men and Adam to keep safely.

Concerning 80 m. of the money of Brother Thomas Templar. To the abbot of Quarr . The king is given to understand that Brother Thomas Templar, who was accustomed to command the king’s great ship, has deposited in his house 80 m. of the king’s money, wherefore the king orders him to cause those to be kept safely so that nothing is to be removed without the king’s special command, as the abbot loves his indemnity and that of his house. For Alice de Jarpunville. To the sheriff of Buckinghamshire. Alice de Jarpunville, daughter and heiress of Albrea de Jarpunville, has made fine with the king by 5 m. for having seisin of the land that Albrea held of the king in chief in his bailiwick and that falls to Alice by hereditary right , and the king has thus taken her homage. Order that, having accepted security from Alice for the aforesaid 5 m., he is to cause her to have full seisin of the aforesaid land with appurtenances in his bailiwick. Order to the sheriff of Essex to cause the land of Geoffrey Monachus, with his chattels, which were taken into the king’s hand for the 10 m. that the king lent to him, which he has not yet rendered, to be replevied to him, having accepted security that he will satisfy the king at Hilary in the eleventh year in 15 days. William Luvel, taken and detained in the king’s prison at Oxford for trespass of the forest, has made fine with the king by four palfreys for his delivery and for quittance from the aforesaid trespass. Order to the sheriff of Oxfordshire that, having accepted security etc., he is to cause the same and his men taken for this reason to be delivered from prison without delay, and to cause their lands and chattels taken into the king’s hand for this reason to be rendered to them. Gilbert de Laigle has made fine with the king by 500 m. for having seisin of his lands, which were taken into his hand by his order, wherefore he is to render that fine at these terms, namely 100 m. at Hilary in the eleventh year, 100 m. at the Ascension in the same year, 100 m. at St. Peter in Chains in the same year, and the rest of that fine at Christmas in the twelfth year, so that in that last term that which was taken from the aforesaid lands at the time when they were in the king’s hand is to be allowed to him. 9 Dec. Westminster. Concerning the fine of G. earl of Gloucester. G. earl of Gloucester has made fine with the king by 2000 m. for marrying his daughter to Baldwin, son of Baldwin de Redvers, earl of Devon, and for having 200 librates of land in custody of the land formerly of the aforesaid earl until the aforesaid Baldwin comes of age. The king has ordered Thomas of Cirencester to cause the aforesaid 200 librates of land to be extended from the land of the aforesaid earl in his bailiwick to the use of the earl of Gloucester. Because in the extent of the aforesaid land £48 8s. 8d. of land was lacking to the earl, as Thomas did not have sufficient land to make up the full amount, order that, having assembled trustworthy and discreet men of his bailiwick, he is to cause £48 8s. 8d. of land to be extended by the view and testimony of the same from the foreign land of the honour of Christchurch , which is in his custody, in order to make good the aforesaid default, and, by the view of the same men, cause the same earl to have full seisin. He is also to cause the stock and corn found in the land assigned to the earl, of which he has had use, to be valued by trustworthy men etc. and to be demised to the earl by the same value, and he is to cause the king to know the value because the earl has given the king surety that he will answer him for that value at the Exchequer. 1

At the petition of the venerable father H. archbishop of Dublin, the king has granted that Reginald of Cornhill may henceforth render £20 per annum of the debt that he owes the king, of which he was accustomed to render £40 per annum. Order to cause this to be enrolled and observed, as aforesaid. 1

17 Dec. Westminster. Concerning fees and rents in Devon retained in the king’s hand. To the sheriff of Devon. The king has retained in his hand the £18 6s. 8d. which William, former earl of Devon, was accustomed to receive each year from the county of Devon in the name of the same county. The king has also retained in his hand the knights’ fees that are held of the earl in the same county, excepting those demesne lands that the king has handed over to his beloved and faithful G. earl of Gloucester with Baldwin de Redvers in order to marry him to his daughter, for which £18 6s. 8d. and the aforesaid fees Thomas of Cirencester will answer the king at the Exchequer for as long as it pleases the king. Order to permit Thomas to have those £18 6s. 8d. and to attorn the knights and free tenants holding the aforesaid fees. [in the Roll]

The king has taken the homage of William de Ros for the lands and fees which Robert de Ros, his father, held of the king in chief and which fall to William by hereditary right. Order that, having accepted security from William for rendering £100 to the king for his relief, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay of the lands and fees that Robert held of the king in chief and that fall to him by inheritance in his bailiwick. Order to the sheriff of Devon that if the abbot of Dunkeswell will give him surety that he will be at the Exchequer at Westminster at the day which is given to the same sheriff to render the arrears of his county , so that the abbot will satisfy the king on that day for the demand for scutage that he makes from him by summons of the Exchequer from the lands formerly of William of Torrington by reason of the lands formerly of the same William of Torrington which the abbot has in free alms of the gift of William Brewer, then he is to permit him to have peace from the aforesaid demand in the meantime and to cause the king to know distinctly and openly on the aforesaid day how much scutage pertains to the abbot from the lands formerly of the aforesaid William and how much pertains to others. 1

The king has granted to Alan de Capella that which pertains to the king for a year and a day from the land formerly of Walter Engayne in Hutton, which is in the king’s hand by reason of the death of Roger Gernon, of which Walter was accused, which Walter, having broken the king’s prison in which he was imprisoned, was captured fleeing and beheaded, and held his land of Alan in chief, as Alan says. Order that, having accepted security from him for 20s. to the king’s use, he is to cause Alan to have full seisin without delay of the aforesaid land with appurtenances, as aforesaid. [in the Roll]
