The king has pardoned to Nicholas de Boleville 50 m. of the 300 m. by which he has made fine with him for having the custody and marriage of the first-born daughter of John Danish and custody of part of the lands formerly of the same John which fall to her as inheritance. The king has granted him that he is to render the remaining 250 m. to him at the below-written terms, namely 20 m. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the twenty-seventh year, 20 m. at the Exchequer of Easter in the twenty-eighth year, and 40 m. thus from year to year at the same terms until the aforesaid 250 m. are paid to the king. 19 Dec. Bordeaux. Allowance for Paulinus Pevyre. To the barons of the Exchequer. They are to allow to the king’s beloved and faithful Paulinus Peyvre in the debts which he owes to the king the 20 m. by which the men of Dunstable have made fine for the trespass that they made against the king’s beloved and faithful John of Lexington whilst the same Paulinus ¹ was sheriff of Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire and that he ought to have taken together with the other issues of the same counties by reason of a fine of 200 m. which he made with the king for having the entire profit of the same counties.

Concerning a pardon for Henry Hoese. The king has taken the homage of Henry Hoese for all the lands formerly of Henry Hoese, his father. Order to the archbishop of York, W. bishop of Carlisle and William de Cantilupe to cause him to have seisin of all the aforesaid lands. The king has pardoned his relief to him at the instance of Hubert Hoese.

They are to pay 10 m. out of the king’s treasure to Adam de Chonay, master of the ship Holy Cross, who was in the king’s service with 16 other sailors (se decimoseptimo marinellorum) from Wednesday next after St. Matthew the Apostle in the twenty-seventh year until St. Thomas the Apostle in the twenty-seventh year, for the arrears of their wages and for a certain anchor lost within the aforesaid period.

Liberate. Nicholas, son of Richard of Dunwich, master of the ship which is called La Blain, who was in the king’s service for the same period with 18 other sailors (se decimonono marinellorum), has a similar writ for paying 100s. to him.

They are to pay 435 m. ¹ out of the king’s treasure to Raymond Méchin, citizen of Bordeaux, or to his certain messenger bearing these letters to this Exchequer of Hilary in the twenty-seventh year, ² which the king received from him in Gascony as a loan. 25 Jan. Bordeaux. Concerning a pardon for Nicholas of Sandford. The king has pardoned to Nicholas of Sandford all the interest which could have accrued to Aaron son of Abraham, Jew of London, from the 10 m. that Nicholas received from him as a loan, and similarly all the interest which could have acrued to Mosse Generus and Elias le Eveske from the 10 m. that he received from them as a loan, from the day he received the loans from them until St. John the Baptist ¹ in the twenty-seventh year etc., and in the meantime the king has granted Nicholas respite from all the aforesaid debt, so that he will then satisfy the aforesaid Jews for this. 21 March. Bordeaux. Liberate. For William Longespée. To the treasurer etc. They are to pay £100 out of the king’s treasure to William Longespée without delay in aid of acquitting himself from the debts that he owes by reason of his pilgrimage into the Holy Land, of the king’s gift.

23 March. Bordeaux. Concerning a pardon for Enguerrand de Fiennes. The king has pardoned to Enguerrand de Fiennes the £10 which he owed him for his relief; and the king has given him respite until the quindene of Michaelmas ¹ in the twenty-seventh year from the 15 m. which he owes him for several prests that are exacted from him by summons of the Exchequer. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause him to be quit from the aforesaid £10 and to have that respite from the aforesaid 15 m.

The king has granted to Geoffrey Esturmy that he is to render each year at the Exchequer the 50 m. which he was accustomed to render per annum to David, Jew of Oxford, for the debts that he owes to the same David at the terms at which he ought to have rendered them to the same David. Order to the justices assigned to the custody of the Jews to cause the aforesaid 50 m. to be allowed each year to the same David in the debts which he himself owes to the king. They are also to cause Geoffrey to have the charters by which he bound himself to David for rendering the aforesaid 50 m. to him per annum.

3 April. Bordeaux. Concerning a pardon for William Mauduit. The king has pardoned to William Mauduit senior 25 m. of 50 m. which he received out of the king’s treasure as a prest by the hand of William Hardel when William Mauduit, his son, was ready to come to the king in Gascony. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause him to be quit from the aforesaid 25 m.

8 April. Bordeaux. For John de Stuteville. The king has given respite to John de Stuteville from all his scutages until the king’s arrival in England. Order to the archbishop of York to cause him to have that respite.

Liberate. For Ingo Periz. To the treasurer etc. They are to pay out of the king’s treasure without delay to Ingo Periz, or to his certain messenger bearing these letters of the king 70 m. of new sterlings which the king received from him as a loan in his great need at Bordeaux. And because the king in no way wished that the aforesaid Ingo should want for the aforesaid 70 m., he sends his letters patent concerning this to them, commanding and firmly enjoining them that they cause him to have all this money, all excuses having been cast aside.

The king has pardoned to John de Plessetis 50 m. of the 60 m. by which he made fine with him for having custody of the land and heir of William Avenel until the lawful age of the same heir, together with the marriage of the same, which is exacted from him by summons of the Exchequer; and the king has given him respite, until the king’s arrival in England, from the remaining 10 m. and from 40 m. of other debts which are similarly exacted from him by summons of the Exchequer. Order to the barons of the Exchequer to cause him to be quit from the aforesaid 50 m. and to have that respite from the remaining 10 m. and 40 m.

Liberate for two citizens of Bordeaux. To the treasurer etc. They are to pay out of the king’s treasure without delay to the messenger of Ernald Beraud and Gaillard de Lart, merchants bearing these the king’s letters the £263 10s., ¹ which the king owes to the same merchants of a loan made to Roger de Ros for buying cloth of silk and cendal to the king’s use, just as the king has enjoined upon them, in the fair of Provins last past, ² having retained the king’s letters patent bearing witness to that loan.

The king has taken the homage of John de Burgh, son and heir of Hubert de Burgh, sometime earl of Kent, for all the lands and tenements which the same H. held of the king in chief and which fall to the same John by hereditary right excepting those lands in which Margaret countess of Kent, who was the wife of the same H., claims her right. Order to cause John to have full seisin of all the lands and tenements which the same earl held of the king in chief and of which he was seised as of fee on the day he died, excepting the aforesaid lands in which the same countess claims her right, because the king has pardoned John his relief. If the aforesaid lands in which the same countess claims her right were in the king’s hand at the time when they received these letters, so that the same countess did not have seisin thereof after the death of the aforesaid earl, they are to retain them in the king’s hand until he has ordered them otherwise concerning this; and if they were in the hand of the aforesaid countess, they are to ensure that she sells nothing from, or otherwise alienates, the aforesaid lands before the king’s coming to England. They are, however, to cause William Bardolf to have full seisin of the honour of Wormgay, which was in the hand of the aforesaid earl of William’s inheritance, having accepted from him that which pertains to the king for the aforesaid honour, excepting his homage. 11 June. Bordeaux. Allowance for P. Peyvre. To the barons of the Exchequer. They are to allow to Paulinus Peyvre, as the king has ordered them at other times, in the debts which he owes to the king, the 20 m. by which the men of Dunstable have made fine for the trespass that they made against John of Lexington whilst the same P. was sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, which the king wishes to be allowed to him by reason of the fine of 200 m. that he made with him for having the whole profit of the same counties for the same period.

They are to allow to Bertram de Criel and John Manselin the issues of the archbishopric of Canterbury from the time when they had the custody of the same archbishopric the £100 which they delivered to the keepers of the works upon the king’s castle of Windsor towards the same works, the £20 which they delivered to Hugh Gifford towards the expenses of Edward, the king’s son, the 100s. which they delivered to Brother Robert Bacon of the king’s gift, ¹ the 100s. which they delivered to Thomas de Pavilly by order of the king, of the 10 m. which they delivered to the Friars Minor of Lewes of the king’s gift towards buying robes, and the 2 m. which they delivered to Brother Roger when he went as the king’s envoy to the king of France. They are also to allow to the same in the same issues the 500 quarters of wheat and 500 quarters of barley and oats which they had sent to Dover in order to provision the king’s castle there and which the king wishes to be allowed to them according to an estimate of the price of the same at which they could have sold them at Easter in the twenty-sixth year. 15 July. Contrabreve. Concerning several things that are to be made at Canterbury. Order to the keepers of the archbishopric of Canterbury that from the issues of the aforesaid archbishopric they are to cause to be made in Christ Church, Canterbury, next to the altar of St. Michael, before which the body of S., formerly archbishop of Canterbury, is buried, according to that which Brother Richard de Siwell’ will provide, an altar of St. Edward and an image of the same saint on one side of the altar of him offering a ring to the image of St. John the Baptist made in the form of a pilgrim on the other side, a table before that altar and another table on that site handsomely decorated with the miracles of St. Edward, and before the same altar a handsome lath-work (lateicium) with the consecrated host. They are also to cause two sets of vestments, one for the eve of festivals and the other for festivals, with a chasuble a handsome silver chalice, and a silver censer to be bought for celebrating masses there. Lestrange, justice of Chester. ¹ Order to cause 20 live bucks and 80 live does to be taken in his bailiwick ² where he judges it can be better done, and to cause those beasts to be sent to Chester to be delivered there to the messenger of the justiciar of Ireland , who will send them to stock a certain park of the king’s in Ireland. Memorandum that Simon of Beverley and Richard Witing’ are bound to render £46 sterling in the king’s Wardrobe in London at All Saints in the twenty-eighth year for wine and other goods which they received from the king’s seneschal of Bordeaux, and their letters patent have been sent into the Wardrobe.

To the treasurer etc. They are to pay out of the king’s treasure to the messenger of Runcinus Bonacurci, Clar’ de Palezol, Runcinus Simonete and Fuline Willelmi, to the use of the same, the 20 m. which Bartholomew Peche accepted from them as a loan when king sent him on embassy to the Emperor, and 2 m. for a penalty because he did not observe a pre-arranged day between him and the aforesaid merchants for rendering the aforesaid loan to them, having retained the king’s letters patent together with the letters patent of the aforesaid Bartholomew.

To the treasurer etc. They are to pay out of the king’s treasure to Bartholomew de Fuier, citizen of Lyon, or to his certain messenger bearing the king’s letters together with the letters patent of Phillip, bishop-elect of Valence, bearing witness that the same Bartholomew has delivered 1000 m. sterling to the king’s messengers in order to expedite certain business of the king in the Roman Curia, 500 m. sterling at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in part payment of the aforesaid 1000 m., and when the king has ordered that the other 500 m. are to be delivered to the same B., they are to receive from him or from his messenger the king’s letters patent bearing witness to the aforesaid loan of 1000 m.

The king has pardoned to P. bishop of Hereford 100 m. of the debts which he owes him and which are attermined at 100 m. per annum by the king’s order, and the king has granted to him that, concerning the residue of those debts and concerning the £300 which he owes him for several prests made to him in the king’s Wardrobe, he is to render to the king at the Exchequer per annum 100 m., namely at the Exchequer of Easter in the twenty-eighth year 50 m. and at the Exchequer of Michaelmas in the same year 50 m., and thus from year to year at the same terms 100 m. until the aforesaid debts are paid to the king.
