27 Oct. Westminster. Lancaster. To the sheriff of Lancaster. The king has received the homage of Adam of Pendlebury for one carucate of land with appurtenances in Pendlebury and for the fourth part of a bovate of land with appurtenances in Shoresworth, of which Elias of Pendlebury, his father, whose heir Adam is, was, he says, seised as of his right and inheritance on the day he died. Order that, having accepted security for rendering his relief of these lands, he is to cause him to have full seisin of them without delay. 1 Witness H. etc.

Yorkshire. To the sheriff of Yorkshire. The king has committed to Robert, former abbot of Thorney , his manor of Easingwold with appurtenances for his sustenance in the king’s service until he can be advanced to another prelacy, so that he is to answer at the Exchequer by his hand for the farm due from this manor, for which the aforesaid sheriff and other sheriffs have been accustomed to answer. Order to cause him to have full seisin of the manor with appurtenances in the aforesaid manner. 1 Witness as above. By the same and the king’s council in the presence of the Legate.

Order to the sheriff of Devon that, having accepted security from Robert de Courtenay for rendering his relief, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay of all lands and appurtenances formerly of Hawise de Courtenay, his mother, which fall to him by inheritance within his bailiwick. Order to the sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire to take into the king’s hand the lands formerly of William of Tilbrook in his bailiwick, and to hand them over without delay to Walter Mauclerk, who will answer the king for the issues for as long as it pleases the king. [No date]. Ireland. The citizens of Dublin give the king the moiety of a debt which Meiler fitz Henry owes them, so that Meiler might be distrained according to the customs of the land of Ireland to render the debt to them, as they can reasonably demonstrate that he ought to render this to them.

Order to the sheriff of Shropshire to place in respite, until his account at the term which the barons of the Exchequer have given him to render his arrears, the demand which he makes by summons of the Exchequer from John fitz Alan for the debt that Thomas of Erdington owed John, King of England, of the fine he made with him for the custody and marriage of William fitz Alan, brother of John, the demand which the sheriff makes upon John for scutage, because John complains that more scutage is being exacted from him than pertains to him of his knights’ fees in the county, and the demand which he makes against John for the debt of £174 from the stock of King John at the time at which Hugh Pantulf was sheriff of Shropshire, so that, then, it might be adjudged before the barons of the Exchequer whether John ought to answer for the debt owed by Thomas of Erdington to King John, for his scutage, and for the debt of £174 of stock, or not. William de Stuteville has made fine with the king by two palfreys for having Margaret who was the wife of Robert de Mortimer to wife with all lands and tenements that fall to her by inheritance. Order to the sheriff of Herefordshire to cause William to have full seisin without delay of all lands and tenements that fall to her by inheritance in his bailiwick. Witness as above.

30 Nov. Hereford. Somerset. To the sheriff of Somerset. Order to place in respite, until the octaves of the Close of Easter in the fourth year, the demand he makes from Nicolaa de la Haye for 500 m., by which she made fine with King John, father of the king, for having her lands and liberties in peace, and which the king’s father pardoned her, so that it may be better known by the barons of the Exchequer and other of the king’s faithful men if Nicolaa ought to answer for this fine or not. 2 Dec. Hereford. The barons of the Exchequer are to know that John Marshal was in the king’s service in Wales by the king’s order on the morrow of St. Andrew and could not appear before them to render his account, and the king postponed the day until 15 days next after Hilary forthcoming in the fourth year, so that he might answer the barons then. Witness H. etc.

4 Dec. Gloucester. Shropshire. Hugh de Mortimer has mainperned before H. de Burgh, justiciar, that he will satisfy the king for all debts he owes him and which he exacts from him by summons of the Exchequer for the arrears of his account. Order to the sheriff to give peace to the same Hugh from these debts until upon his account. Witness H. etc. By the same.

5 Dec. Bristol. Gloucestershire. Walter Martini, taken and detained in prison at Gloucester for the death of Simon Blund, 1 gives the king 20s. so that he is handed over on bail to twelve trustworthy and law-worthy men of the county of Gloucestershire, who are to mainpern to have him before the itinerant justices in those parts to stand to right for Simon’s death. Walter Crook, who held of the king in chief, has taken the religious habit and his inheritance falls by right to Humphrey, his brother, who, by his spontaneous will in the king’s court, has granted his son, Henry, all the right that he had in the inheritance. The king has granted the custody of Henry and his marriage to William Brewer and thus orders the sheriff to cause him to have full seisin of all lands and tenements formerly of Walter Crook in his bailiwick without delay, having accepted security from William for the relief owed to the king for the lands. Order to the sheriff of Hampshire that, having accepted security from John Biset for £50, 1 to be rendered to the king 2 at the terms the king has given him for the £100 which he owes him for his relief, 3 namely at £10 a year until he marries, so that then he is to make a bargain with the king at the king’s will for the remainder of the aforesaid debt, to be rendered to the king at the terms the king will then set, he is to cause John to have full seisin of all lands and tenements with appurtenances in his bailiwick that William Biset, John’s brother, whose heir he is, had on the day he died of the lands and tenements formerly of Henry Biset, their father. William Chamberlain senior, claimant, gives the king half a mark for having a pone before the itinerant justices against William Chamberlain junior, concerning two carucates of land with appurtenances in Woolford, a carucate of land in Nordhall’, a carucate in Hope, four virgates and a messuage in Rodmarton, four marcates of rent in Eastleach and three solidates of rent in Southrop . To William de Putot. John son of Richard came to the Exchequer and offered to give the king 1000 m. a year for the king’s Cornish stannaries, for which he said he was ready to give surety by good pledges and, furthermore, place his lands in counterpledge. The king would be induced to accept this if the Legate and H. de Burgh, justiciar, to whom the king had sent for counsel, would assent. Order to restore, under the seal of the prior of Launceston or another, the new die of the king’s stannary, which had been handed over to him in London, to a trustworthy man of religion and a faithful knight of the county, so that nothing is stamped until they have received a command from the king otherwise. If anything is stamped at the forthcoming term, the king may lose the annual rent for the forthcoming year, which is not safe for him. The king is also sending John to William’s locality to find before William good and sufficient pledges of that county for paying part of that money annually to the king, and for paying the remainder of the money he shall find surety in the county of Devon, and William is to receive these pledges and cause them to be recorded and to signify to the king by his letters when he has received them, so that, having accepted William’s testimony, the king might commit the stannary to John for the aforesaid money each year, if the Legate and his lord 1 will confirm it with their assent. Devon. To the sheriff of Devon. The king has committed to John son of Richard for 1000 m., to be paid annually, the stannary of the county of Cornwall, about which the king has ordered the sheriff of Cornwall to receive in his county from John good and sufficient pledges for paying one part of this money, and John has said he will give the king surety for the remainder of this money by good and sufficient pledges in Devon. Order to receive from John those good and sufficient pledges for paying that part of this money, who will be able to answer the king for this money, and cause the names of those to be recorded, and signify to the king by his letters the names of the pledges, so that, having accepted the sheriff’s testimony, the king might commit the stannary to John for the aforesaid money each year.
