This has been been given as the first entry on this roll but is actually located some seven inches down the membrane. Little remains of the first six inches in length of this membrane. Both left and right sides have been lost and only two inches of the central part of the membrane remain. The text here is largely illegible and none of the usual marginal annotations can be easily discerned. The text from the section between this and the first entry, given here, has not been given as separate entries as it is not always clear where one entry ends and another begins. This part of the membrane reads: ‘Thomas of Newark had the priory of St. Swithun’s [...] owes 1000 [?] at Christmas [...] the sheriff of Gloucestershire to take all the lands that Robert Musard held of [...] the sheriffs of Derbyshire , Berkshire and Yorkshire [...] the sheriff of Bedfordshire to take security from the executors of the testament [...] in which money the same John was bound to the king and [to cause] those executors [to have free administration of] the chattels [...] teshull’ owes £100 for his relief for the lands formerly [...] the king’s hand the manor of Ravensden until he is ordered otherwise in respect thereof [...] 25 m. of this fine at Easter in the twenty-fourth year and at [...]’. Geoffrey Despenser has made fine with the king by 500 m. for having the custody of the lands and heirs of Robert Musard with the marriage of the same heirs. The king has granted to him that he may render the aforesaid 500 m. at the Exchequer by his own hand, namely 30 m. at Easter in the twenty-fourth year and 30 m. at Michaelmas in the same year, and 60 m. thus from year to year by the same terms, so that in the last year he is to render 80 m. at the same terms namely 40 m. at Easter and 40 m. at Michaelmas. If death befalls the aforesaid heirs whilst they are in the custody of the same Geoffrey, then he is to be quit of all that will remain to be rendered of the aforesaid fine.
