2 Nov. Westminster. Northumberland. To the sheriff of Northumberland. The king has heard for certain that his faithful man Phillip of Oldcoates, the sheriff’s lord, has died, wherefore order to take into the king’s hand without delay all lands which Phillip had in his bailiwick, whether by gift or by bail of King John, the king’s father, or whether of the king himself, or by custody, or in any other manner whatsoever, and to keep them safely with all chattels and other property found therein, and, with the king's faithful man Robert of Lexington, the king’s clerk , who the king has sent to his parts on this matter, to cause them to be distinctly and openly recorded, so that the sheriff has one roll and Robert another. He is to keep the aforesaid lands so safely with all chattels found therein that he will know how and be able to answer for them sufficiently at the king’s summons. Witness H. etc. By the same.

Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. To the sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Phillip of Oldcoates, who was bound to the king in great debts, is dead. Order to take into the king’s hand without delay all land Phillip held in his bailiwick, of whatever fee, with all chattels found therein, which he is to cause to be distinctly and openly recorded, so that he has one roll and the king's beloved and faithful Robert of Lexington, king’s clerk , who the king has sent to him on account of this, the other roll. He is then to commit all of that land and all of those chattels to the same Robert to keep on the king’s behalf and Robert will answer the king. Witness as above. William son of Hubert, taken and detained in the king’s prison in Lincoln for the death of Walter of Washingborough, gives the king one mark, to be handed over on bail to twelve 1 trustworthy and law-worthy men of the county of Lincolnshire, who are to mainpern to have him before the itinerant justices, ready to answer Geoffrey of Washingborough for the death of the aforesaid Walter, his son, of which he appeals him. He has the writ. Order to the sheriff of Lincolnshire to take etc. Witness H. etc.

William de Cantilupe has made fine with the king by 500 m. for having custody of the lands and heirs of Robert de Chandos, and the marriage of the same heirs, to be rendered to the king at the Exchequer at the terms given to him. Order to cause the same William to have full seisin without delay of the lands formerly of Robert with all appurtenances in his bailiwick, and of the heirs, saving to Sarra who was Robert’s wife her reasonable dower which pertains to her from the same lands. 1 Witness H. etc. By the same and the bishop of Winchester.

The abbot of Torre gives the king a palfrey, for which William Brewer is his pledge, for having a weekly market on Wednesdays at his manor of Wolborough, until the king comes of age, and for having an annual three-day fair there, until the king comes of age, on the eve, feast and morrow of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, unless the aforesaid market and fair etc. Order to the sheriff of Devon to cause him to have the aforesaid market and fair. Roger of Ogle gives half a mark for having a precipe before the king’s justices at Westminster at Hilary in one month against Thomas of Ogle, concerning 80 acres of land with appurtenances in Burradon, which he holds of him by the charter that he has of him. He has the precipe. Order to the sheriff of Northumberland to take surety from Roger for that half-mark to the king’s use for that precipe. Witness William Brewer.

Order to take into the king’s hand without delay 27 librates of land in Ilmington and Birstall, which the king had ordered to be assigned to Phillip of Oldcoates, who is dead, with all his chattels and property found in the same land, so that he might answer the king sufficiently for the chattels and property found in the aforesaid land and for the issues of the same land. Henry, son and heir of Alard le Fleming has made fine with the king by £20 for his relief that he owes him for the land he ought to hold of the king in chief in Rissington and in Sapperton. Order that, having accepted security from Henry for rendering the aforesaid fine, he is to cause him to have full seisin of all lands and tenements formerly in the king’s hand in his bailiwick, of which Alard, his father, had been seised on the day he died. The abbot of St. Osyth gives the king a palfrey for having a weekly market on Wednesdays, until the king comes of age, at the new stead of the same abbot in Brentwood, unless the market etc. Order to the sheriff of Essex to cause him to have that market and to take security for the aforesaid palfrey. William of Harlow has made fine with the king by 5 m. for having custody of the land and heirs of Brian le Wer until the king comes of age, saving to the king the marriage of the same heirs. Northamptonshire. To the barons of the Exchequer. For the faithful service that Baldwin de Guines showed to the king's father and has later shown to the king and his father, the king has pardoned him all of the rent that he owed him for the vill of Apethorpe from the time that peace was agreed until Michaelmas last past in the fourth year, and that manor is henceforth to remain in the king’s hand. The sheriff of Northamptonshire has been ordered to take that vill into the king’s hand 1 and hand it over to men of that vill, in order that they answer at the Exchequer, as they were accustomed to answer in the reign of King John in the time of peace. Order to cause Baldwin to be quit of that rent. Witness as above.

Order to take all those lands into the king’s hand, saving to Baldekin, kinsman of the same Henry, the custody of the lands formerly of Robert of Tintagel that Henry gave to him, and to demise the same custody to Baldekin in peace. Command, firmly ordering them, to hand over without delay to the king’s beloved and faithful Robert of Lexington all lands which Phillip of Oldcoates held of the fee of their lord, whether by gage, custody, inheritance, or in any other manner whatsoever, with all chattels found therein, so that he might answer the king by his hand, as the king has enjoined him. 8 Dec. Westminster. Cornwall. To S. bishop of Exeter, the earls, barons, knights, free tenants and all men of the county of Cornwall. The king has heard through H. de Burgh, justiciar, and other faithful men of the king’s council that, when the king was lately at Exeter, the bishop, with several men of the same county, offered him 500 m. for the whole county of Cornwall by the king’s aforesaid faithful men, so that the king would appoint one of them to be sheriff, as was granted to them by the charter of King John, father of the king, and that whereas they were answered there that they were to told there to send some of their number to London after Michaelmas last past, so that the king could ordain on the matter having taken greater weight of counsel, John son of Richard and Robert son of Richard came to London on their behalf instantly praying the same. The king, therefore, assenting to their prayers, granted them their sheriff from amongst them, namely John son of Richard, in whom the king trusts, granting them, by the aforesaid fine of 500 m., quittance from the carucage lately assessed throughout his realm to the king’s use, so that they are then to render to the king 200 m. at Easter next in the fifth year and 300 m. at Michaelmas next following in the same year, and from the same feast of Michaelmas they are to render 300 m. each year of the 1300 m. by which they made fine with the king’s father for licence to disafforest and for other liberties granted them by the charter of the same father, until the fine of those 1300 m. is paid. William Herlicun gives the king the fourth part of that which he can acquire of 30 m. from the first monies for summoning Richard de Umfraville before the justices at Westminster at Hilary in three weeks to render to him those 30 m. The sheriff of Northumberland is not ordered to take security for that fourth part of those monies, because Benedict Painter and Roger Makesause, citizens of London, are his pledges for prosecuting and for paying that fourth part of those monies to the king from the first monies. The king has committed to the venerable father W. archbishop of York, as principal keeper of the bishopric of Durham , the custody of the son and heir of Geoffrey de Coyners, which King John, father of the king, gave to Phillip of Oldcoates during the vacancy of the see, so that when R. bishop of Durham, chancellor, returns to England if it is considered in the king’s court that the king ought to have the custody of the aforesaid heir and his land, by right, the archbishop is to answer the king for that heir and the issues and proceeds arising from his land. If it is considered that the aforementioned bishop ought to have that custody, the archbishop is to answer the bishop in the same manner for the same heir and the issues and proceeds of his land. Order to take into the king’s hand without delay all of the king’s demesne lands in Cambridgeshire, namely those demesnes of which King John, the king’s father, was seised at the beginning of the war between him and his barons. They are to keep all those demesnes and all those escheats safely in the king’s hand, so that they remove nothing therefrom until the king orders otherwise, saving wainage and reasonable maintenance pertaining to them, causing it to be distinctly and openly put in writing what and how much and of what value are those demesnes and each of those escheats, and who holds them, and they are to be before the king in person at Westminster at Michaelmas in one month in order to certify to the king plainly and evidently concerning all this, and to cause all those who hold those demesnes or escheats to know that they are to be before the king on the same day to show their sufficient warrant, if they will have such.
